Power Bank Buying Guide: Capacity, Watts and Which One to Get

By Voltpine ·

Power banks all look alike on paper, and the numbers on the box don't always mean what you'd expect. The two that matter most are capacity, in mAh, which is how much energy it holds, and output, in watts, which is how fast it can push that energy into your phone or laptop.

Below is a quick guide to reading those numbers, followed by six power banks that cover the usual needs: something tiny for a bag, an everyday 10,000mAh pack, a 20,000mAh pack for longer days, one that can charge a laptop, and a backup for camping.

Six picks, from pocket-size to laptop-ready

1. 5000mAh Mini Power Bank with Built-In Cable, LED Light and Fold-Out Stand

$20.99 · Free US shipping on orders $35+

The small one. A built-in cable means you never forget a cord, and it doubles as a flashlight and a phone stand. Output is 10W, so it's for topping up a phone rather than fast charging.

Buying tips

mAh is the size of the tank.
A 5,000mAh pack is a top-up, 10,000mAh is roughly a day of heavy phone use, and 20,000mAh and up is for trips or several devices. You never get the full rated amount into your phone, because some energy is lost as heat while charging.
Watts are the speed.
Phones fast-charge at around 20W and up, so 10W is slow but fine overnight or in a bag. For a laptop, check the laptop's charger wattage and match it with a USB-C port that can deliver at least that much.
Cables and charging standards.
Built-in cables are convenient, but make sure the connectors match your devices (USB-C, Lightning). For fast charging, the power bank and the phone both need to support the same standard, such as USB PD.
Wireless is convenient, not fast.
Wireless pads are handy for phones that support them, but they charge slower and run warmer than a cable.
Solar is a backup.
A small solar panel on a power bank takes a long time to refill the battery. Charge it from the wall before a trip and treat the solar panel as emergency power.
Flying with a power bank.
Airlines require power banks in carry-on bags, not checked luggage. Packs up to 100Wh are generally allowed without special approval; the Wh figure is usually printed on the pack.
